The House of Eve (Review)

“And this trip downtown had shown me that we even had to fight for what should have been free: our dignity.”

The review

Ruby and Eleanor have very little in common — one is a poor Black girl in Philadelphia with a mom who doesn’t want her and big dreams of getting an education. Eleanor, however, had two loving parents who worked hard to be able to send her to school in Washington D.C. But something happens to both women that sets their lives off track — and boy are the dominos read to fall.

Really loved the two characters/same timeline — in the 1950s. I loved how Ruby and Evelyn had so much in common, yet their lives took hugely different paths. My one thing is this book maybe didnt need to be sooooo long. Loved that there was a nod to the author’s previous book, Yellow Wife, in there!

I have to say. I was way more drawn to Ruby’s story! Eleanor was great but her problems seemed someone smaller compared to Ruby’s. Either way, this book felt like 5 books crammed into one! I wished it was a bit shorter, but I enjoyed it nonetheless!
