Maybe that was the trick to life: to notice all the tiny moments in the day when everything else fell away and, for a split second, or maybe even a few seconds, you had no worries, only pleasure, only appreciation of what was right in front of you.”
― Emma Straub, This Time Tomorrow
The review
THIS TIME TOMORROW is a heartfelt time travel story — aka my FAVORITE subgenre (potentially not a real thing but is to me). On the night before Alice’s 40th bday, with her life a bit in shambles, she accidentally travels back in time to her 16th birthday. Rather than getting up to go to the hospital to visit her ailing father, he’s right there at her childhood breakfast table, 40 years old and healthy as can be. As it turns out, there’s a lot Alice can change about her life in the present by going back to that day — and she’s going to make those changes to take a peek into the different lives she could have lived.
I adored this book. I loved Alice, and maybe more importantly, her dad and best friend. I really love when authors have a personal tie to their books, and this is a great example of this. Emma Straub was inspired by visiting her own father in the hospital, and thankfully she got to write and publish this book before he passed away so he got to read it and if you’re not tearing up just at the thought of this, you’re a monster. 😭 (or maybe read the book to see how adorable the fictional dad-daughter relationship is and then cry).
It’s short and packs a punch and I LOVED the audiobook too! There are some fun ‘90s vibes that I enjoyed and plenty of time travel references!
