Yellowface (Review)

“Writing is the closest thing we have to real magic. Writing is creating something out of nothing, is opening doors to other lands. Writing gives you power to shape your own world when the real one hurts too much. To stop writing would kill me.”

— R. F. Kuang, Yellowface

The review

June is friends (frenemies?) with THE literary darling, Athena, which gives June a front-row seat to watching Athena accomplish everything June has ever dreamt of. Until one day, June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, without thinking it through, June takes Athena’s manuscript, not intending to pass it off as her own work… until she does.

What an incredible, fast-paced read — I couldn’t put it down. I hated June, I hated Athena, I hated the publishing team — but I LOVED the drama, the mystery, and tbh I even loved hating everyone. June said just about everything a writer with white privilege had ever thought. The thing that sounds innocuous, but is really extremely problematic.

This book calls out everyone — publishers for the prejudice, authors for their jealousy, the media/influencers for their judgement, and readers for their role in the whole vicious cycle.

Side note: This book was FANTASTIC on audio.

If you give even just two figs about the publishing world, pick this one up! You’ll definitely enjoy it!
