I love, love, LOVE Chandler Baker’s books. You can always count on them to have social commentary that hits deep, a big plot twist and/or whodunnit, and a cast of relatable characters. Even when the book is about child vampires.

The review
The Little Academy’s class of four-year-olds is facing an epidemic of sorts. The tiny children are blood thirsty. Literally. Their mothers — who have already given their bodies, milk, careers, and figurative lifeblood already — are willing to do what it takes for the betterment of their child. Even if it means putting a bit of O-negative in their lunchboxes while the police investigate a murder that happened in the classroom.
Again, I repeat my love for Chandler Baker. She is the PERFECT bookclub author. Her social commentary hits so home — The Whispers for corporate womanhood, The Husbands for wives who do too much for their families, and now Cutting Teeth for mothers sick of being expected to sacrifice their bodies.
Now, even as a non-wife, non-mon, I found this book extremely profound and accurate. I’ve seen so many of my best friends in the same situations as the moms in this book (well, minus the child vampires).
BECAUSE YES THIS BOOK IS ABOUT CHILD VAMPIRES. Sort of. But not like “sort of but not really.” I have to be clear — these fictional four year olds drink real blood, and yes that is gross but the point is for it to be wild and gross lol. There’s also a murder. And three moms who slightly (barely) consider whether or not their blood-craving child is capable (no way, absolutely no way, but, I mean, they were there — and there’s a small tiny footprint in the blood…. so…).
It’s an absolute wild ride of a thriller (without being *too* thriller). If you loved one or both of Chandler’s books before, you will like this one — even if you read the synopsis and was like “child vampires? Really?” Yes really and it’s fab.
Thank you to Flatiron and Macmillan Audio for the review copies. This book is out July 18!
