The review
Barnett Durang has complicated feelings about his childhood home. On the one hand, it’s his favorite place with his favorite person, his mom. On the other, he’s never felt welcome to be who he truly is.
Now, years later, Farmer Mom Chrissy is ready to welcome her boy home so he can takeover the family farm full of misfit pets and livestock, but Barnett has a different idea for the big announcement he came home to tell his family. He’s engaged. To a man.
Full of a vibrant and endlessly entertaining cast of characters, this book navigates love — unconditional and otherwise — and religion, as well as how humans can adapt (no matter their age and circumstance) to situations well outside their comfort zone if they are given the grace and support they need.
This book was exactly what I wanted it to be — fun and funny in a very Schitt’s Creek way but also tackling tough challenges. Of course I wanted Chrissy to show her child the love and support he needed from like page 1. It’s frustrating to see that relationship be so tragically strained, but it felt real. So unbelievably real. To see a mom so overcome with love for her son yet still be so at odds with his lifestyle.
I loved everything about this book from start to finish — the audiobook was incredible tool Thank you Henry Holt for the gifted copy. Pick it up asap!
