The review

This dual timeline historical fiction book has all the ingredients to break your heart — so get ready for it!

🇮🇹 Genoa, Italy, 1946
Vincenzo and Giovanna come from completely different worlds, but that doesn’t stop them from falling head over heels for each other. But nothing gold can stay — a shift in power in their Italian village threatens to topple over their fragile romance.

🗽 New York, 2017
Cassandra and Luca are in love, but their families couldn’t be more different. Luca, an artist, convinces his grandfather and Cass’s grandmother to pose for a painting, past and present collide and reveal a secret that changes everything.

Jill Santopolo is an all-star when it comes to emotional romance, and this one features not one but TWO couples! One Italian star crossed couple falling for each other after WWII despite their respective classes and the other navigating a similar challenge in 2017.

I thought this was an easy-to-read novel that kept me on my toes — I didn’t know who to root for! Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t trust handsome Italian men (thanks Friends and Lizzie McGuire — both with male Italian villains, both named Paolo). Vincenzo and Luca were both more likable men, but I still wondered if their rich backgrounds would prevent them from accepting their true loves!

I think in an emotional romance, you truly don’t know if you’ll get a happy ending. If you’ve read Jill Santopolo before you know that. So I was hooked until the very end!
