The Girl With the Louding Voice (Review)

“My mama say education will give me a voice. I want more than just a voice, Ms. Tia. I want a louding voice,”

The review

Adunni is a 14-year-old girl living in modern day Nigeria when her father informs her she will be becoming the third wife to a man much older than her — in fact, his eldest daughter is Adunni’s same age. The man has offered to financially provide for Adunni’s brothers and father so, even though her mother’s dying wish was that Adunni goes to school and gets an education, she’s sent away in exchange for a dowry.

The story unfolds with each heartbreaking turn. Through all the loss and devastation, Adunni never loses sight of her one and only goal — to get an education. Written in such a profound way and uniquely capturing Adunni’s voice, this book never lets the reader (or Adunni) get comfortable in any situation she’s in. You’re holding your breath for the girl until the very end of the story.

I just loved this sweet character from start to finish. Her optimism, her strength, and her voice (louding or not!) was so special to me. I am in awe of Abi Daré’s beautiful writing — she shares in her author’s note that Adunni’s voice came to her and was a part of her mind for a few years with the book. I listened to parts of this novel on audiobook, so I can say confidently how great it is to listen to Adunni on a regular basis. Though, it was not long enough! I already miss this story — even in spite of it breaking my heart at times!

I keep trying to compart this book to something and I can’t. It’s extremely unique and I am better for reading it.
