Oona Out of Order (Review)

Spoiler alert: I adored Oona! 😍

“Most people’s lives are novels. But yours is a series of short stories.”

— Oona Out of Order

The vibe

Book / Bag / Dress /Booties / Glasses / Earrings / Bracelet

Oona may be different ages throughout the book, but she’s always stylish. And her switch always happens on her birthday on January 1, which means she’s always partying NYE like there’s no tomorrow.

The review

👀OONA OUT OF ORDER by Margarita Montimore 👀
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Every year on Oona’s birthday, which just so happens to be New Year’s Day, she sort of… time travels. She has no clue what caused the phenomenon (that’s happened to her every year since she turned 19), but she basically jumps to different years in her same body. For instance, 19-year-old Oona’s mind ends up in 51-year-old Oona’s body. The jumps seem random, and require so much adjustment. Sometimes she jumps to years where an older (wiser) Oona left herself a note explaining things. Sometimes, not so much. The book outlines just 7 years of Oona’s life, which is presented to her completely out of order.

OK, I absolutely adored it. I picked it up one afternoon and did not put it down until I hit the end. I loved absolutely everything, from the ’80s and ’90s vibes and the importance of music to her personality to the phenomenal writing and the characters — of course loveable Oona, but also Madeleine and Kensie. I absolutely understand why some reviews say it’s hard to keep track, but I really had no problem (because I read it in one sitting? lol) but for this reason I think this one is better read than listened to, maybe? Anyways, this one goes right to the top of my best of 2021 stack! I absolutely cannot wait to discuss this one with my book club in a couple weeks!
