Buckle up because this historical fiction book will take you through space and time to a civil war on the island Cyprus. The city is on the brink of collapse and two teens are about to find out if their forbidden love can survive. Cozy up, put on your Evil Eye necklace, and brew some peppermint tea — you’re in for an emotional rollercoaster.

The review

🌳THE ISLAND OF MISSING TREES by Elif Şafak 🌳

Split between past and present, this story follows Defne and Kostas as they fall in love amid a civil war that’s ripping the island of Cyprus apart. Over 30 years later in the UK, their daughter Ada is coping with the loss of her mother and trying to get answers from her father and an aunt she’s never met before. The one constant in the two story lines? A fig tree that’s observed it all.

This book is incredibly unique — from the story and setting to the tree being a narrator. I feel like it’s rare for me to read a book set in dual timelines and truly love both timelines, but I really did! I also just adored all the characters — human and otherwise. I also just love learning something from a novel, and I absolutely did with this one.

Read if.. you loved Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult and Romeo and Juliet is your favorite Shakespeare!

Btw, the tree resides in the middle of a restaurant in Cyprus. How iconic that my book club and I picked a bar in Houston that also has a tree right in the middle of it to discuss!
