The review

Hands down, one of my favorite books of this year was The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. I’ve been procrastinating on writing a review, dreaming up the perfect photos and words for over a week. But here we go.

📝 Brief synopsis: Leni has never stayed put for long. Since her dad, Ernt, got back from being a POW in Vietnam, he’s not treated her mom, Cora, right and he’s moved his family around quite a bit. But 13-year-old Leni is promised a different life in Alaska, where the family is moving to become homesteaders. Everything they eat, wear, and use will be from their own land. But, “Alaska didn’t create character; it revealed it,” as the book reads. The long, dark nights of an Alaskan winter do not help Ernt’s mental instability, and Leni and Cora are not safe alone with Ernt in The Great Alone. There are hundreds ways to die (or come close) in Alaska, and you see a few in the pages of this incredible read.

🚫 CW: domestic abuse, some gore, brain injury

💭 My thoughts: this book was such a wild ride. Every section I read felt like an emotional rollercoaster and it got to a point about 2/3rds in where every time I picked up the book, I was promised some tears. I got so emotionally invested, y’all. Leni and Matthew’s love was so pure and adorable. Cora and Leni’s relationship was devastatingly special. And my heart raced at every moment I thought was sure to set off Ernt’s temper. Not gonna lie, I legit sobbed my way through the final pages of this book. And, as long as it is, I wanted it to keep going.

🌟 Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

📖 Read if…. You need a good emotional rollercoaster and loved Wild or Call of the Wild.
