The review

๐ŸŽถ THE FINAL REVIVAL OF OPAL AND NEV by Dawnie Walton ๐ŸŽธ
This one was billed as a Daisy Jones and the Six but make it punk rock with a strong Black feminist lead โ€” and I am here to confirm that it was exactly that.

LISTEN TO IT. This one was another one of those for me where I think I’m going to read it and only occasionally pop on the audiobook when I want to cook dinner but don’t want to put the book down… but then I became obsessed with the characters’ voices! Seriously, such a great production from Simon Audio and its cast of narrators (note: got the ALC from NetGalley!). The audiobook brought the novel to life โ€” which I appreciate so much because I desperately wish it was real and that I could play some of Opal & Nev’s hits. I will settle for Dawnie Walton’s Spotify playlist of songs that inspired the book.

NOBODY’S PERFECT. There’s a pretty big batch of characters in this one, and I gotta say, everyone is morally flawed. Of course, some more than others โ€” there’s a guy from the label who gives you Trump vibes โ€” and even Opal and Nev have problematic moments so that it’s only Sunny, the music journalist writing the fictional book, who you’re really rooting for the whole time.

IT’S GOT SOME MOMENTS. For the most part though, it chugs along. Some parts kinda lost me but then others brought me right the heck back in. There were some key moments in Opal and Nev’s “history” that felt extremely too real (tragically).
